I felt like doing a backflip (I broke my nose the first and last time I did it) when I received the news that Youngster slammed it big at the 38th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA). The deeply coveted glass trophy had an inscription “Best Youth Magazine.” Oh man, aren’t those words music to the ears? The announcement sent me reeling with joy. And for a minute my breathing grew heavy in a good way as compliments flooded my inbox and Facebook page.
It was a surreal experience at its finest. For one, this is the first time that Youngster snagged the award from its equally praiseworthy competitors; and two, it happened on my term as its newly posted captain. Who would have thought that the magazine that was once in need of saving is now recovering its glorious beginnings? Yes, there is no stopping for us right now. Or in the words of Miley Cyrus, “And we won’t stop / Can’t you see it’s we who own the night? / Can’t you see it’s we who ’bout that life?”
Wait, that doesn’t sound quite right. While the award in itself is a noble thing, we are not letting it get into our heads, lest we lose sight of our real vision. An award is just frosting on the cake. To be given the opportunity to evangelize the youth through this magazine is a gift in itself. Reaping awards has never been the business of Youngster. We simply care about forming the youth to be ministers of God’s Word. The magazine has never been about us, the staff; it has always been about God who works in and through this apostolic work.
So even as we consider this recognition a huge feat—historical, if you want—we remain as humble servants in the vineyard of the Lord. This glinting trophy enthuses us to be more creative, committed, and passionate in our work of evangelization.
To our dear readers, our heartfelt thanks for your continual support. Cheers! Here’s to a more meaningful journey with you! (Triple backflip!).
